What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance. Although we are often warned of the danger  of cholesterol causing heart disease, we can't survive without it.

It is essential to the body's cell membranes, to the insulation of nerves, and to the production of certain hormones. It is also used by the liver to make bile acids which help digest your food.

Why is High Cholesterol BAD?

High blood Cholesterol is a "risk factor" for heart disease. That means that having high blood cholesterol increases your chance (risk) of getting heart disease. You can lower your risk of heart disease by lowering your cholesterol level.

Did you know?

  •  Cholesterol is needed by the body
  •  Cholesterol is used for strong Cell Walls
  •  Cholesterol is critical for hormone and Vitamin D Production
  •  Your body produces Cholesterol

It is recommended that blood cholesterol levels (the amount of cholesterol circulating in our blood) be no greater than 200mg/dl, with a total level of 180mg/dl being optimal.

Our total cholesterol is broken down into 3 separate components:

  • HDL (high density lipoproteins)
    • HDL cholesterol is known as the “good” cholesterol. It functions to remove cholesterol from the blood and blood vessel walls, where it returns it to the liver for elimination
    •
  • LDL (low density lipoproteins)
  • VLDL (very low density lipoproteins)
    • LDL and VLDL cholesterol are considered to be harmful to the body, because it carries cholesterol into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, it can be deposited on the artery walls, which promotes arteriosclerosis.

What causes high Cholesterol

Excess cholesterol accumulates on the walls of the arteries to produce plaques. These plaques narrow the blood vessels and reduce blood supply to the tissues. This process produces a range of cardiovascular diseases (diseases of the heart and blood vessels), which is the most common causes of death in the Western World.

The ratio of HDL to LDL in the blood is a factor in determining the risk of developing heart disease.

 FACT
About 42 Million American Adults Have Cholesterol Levels of 240 or Above Which Is Considered High Risk

Be responsible about heart disease.

You owe it to yourself.
