Cholesterol

Cholesterol is a soft, waxy substance which is found among the lipids (fats) in the bloodstream and in all your body's cells. It is a very important part of a healthy body because it is used to form cell membranes, some hormones and is needed for other functions. But a high level of in the blood hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for coronary heart disease, which leads to heart attack.

Most of the in our body is made by our liver. Some also comes from foods such as eggs, meats and dairy products. It is measured in milligrams per 100 millimeters of blood. The normal level of varies between 150 - 200 mg per 100 ml. In blood, occurs in combination with certain lipids (fats), hence, known as lipoptroteins.

Causes of Cholesterol

High density cholesterols (HDL) are considered good and reduces harmful low density from the blood and tissues and delivers it to the liver where it is processed for excretion.
Low density cholesterols (LDL) promote deposits in the arteries gradually leading to narrowing and hardening which blocks the passage of blood. This condition is termed as "atherosclerosis" which leads to high blood pressure and heart diseases.

Many factors appear to contribute to the development of high : -

• Heredity -- Your genes partly influence how your body makes and handles cholesterol.
• Your diet -- A high intake of saturated fat, dietary cholesterol, and excess calories can cause your

levels to increase. Being overweight can increase your LDL levels and decrease your HDL levels.
• Age and gender -- levels begin to increase in both men and women beginning around 20 years of age. Premenopausal women usually have lower levels of when compared with men of the same age. After menopause, a woman's LDL level typically goes up, as does her risk for heart disease.
• Other medical conditions -- Conditions such as diabetes, liver disease, thyroid disease, or kidney disease can cause elevated cholesterol.
• Lack of physical activity -- Increased physical activity lowers LDL and raises HDL levels. Lack of exercise can cause the opposite.
